Channel Letters signs answer the delicate question if size matters. In the plethora of building sign options, channel letters help make an unmatched bold brand statement.

They offer the physical dimension to attract the people’s ever-reducing attention span. If visibility is a big concern, channel letters are the way to go.

Yet, size is all about finding the right balance between too small or too large.

If you are considering investing in a building sign, take the next few minutes to learn more about channel letter signs.

What Are Channel Letters?

Channel letters are noticeable in the urban environment. They are these three-dimensional signs.

Drive around in your neighborhood, and you will notice them. Night and day, they fulfill the great purpose of having your business visible.

Any local business uses them:

  • Shopping centers
  • Restaurants
  • Bars & Cafes
  • Dealerships and more

They can be customized with different sizes, colors, and shapes, and integrate LED lighting in various ways.
They can be installed on most surfaces and can be either mounted on:

  • Raceway - a thicker rectangular structure made of aluminum to conceal and protect the electrical system of the channel letter
  • Baker - a slimmer rectangular structure contains wires only
  • Flush - letters are attached directly to the building surface

In other words, they are customizable and versatile, and always make a big impression.

A channel letter signs can be made of letters, numbers, logos, or characters, and made of aluminum or acrylic.

How to choose the right channel letter for your business?

The first question you have to answer is what style are you going for? Before selecting one of the four options of channel letters, try to think your brand through and determine the style you dig the most.

It’s that simple. And yet, you need to make sure you will not regret that style in a few years from now.

Usually, business owners try to consider the type of lighting effect they would love to see their brand associated with.

Typically there are four different types of channel letters:
  • Open-Face - This type has the front face of the letter open to expose the neon lighting system

  • Front-Lit - The acrylic face of the letter is illuminated by neon or LED lights. In this type,  the face of the letter is illuminated but does not let the lighting system exposed

  • Reverse-Lit - These channel letters are mounted away from the wall to have the light halo-lit the letter

  • Lit & Back-Lit - this type allows the face of the letter to be illuminated with one color, which contrasts with the backlighting that is usually in a different color

All these different types offer different light effects. The choice is usually subjective and comes down to preferences or budget. Hence, there might be compromises to make, but working with a sign specialist will help you get as close as possible to the desired look.

I like the idea of having the channel letters lit with halo-light. I think it would make them pop out a lot more at night. That would bring a lot more customers no matter the time of day.

I can see how a business could really benefit from getting the right letters as a sign in order to tell customers who they are. Making sure that they can get some help from a professional could allow them to have better marketing. It was interesting to learn about how they can get different lights that can emphasize the brand that can help them to look a lot better.

It's interesting to know that there are ways wherein the signage can have LED or neon lights installed in them. As you said, this can be achieved to light up the face of the letter while the lighting system is hidden. I would like to have that kind of decoration for our reception as the signs for the tables of our guests.

I've always loved the look of neon signs and want to have one of my own when I start my own bowling alley here in town. I think I may have to inquire about the flush variety of them since they seem to be the ones that offer the most versatility. I'll be sure to look for sign light retrofitting companies here in our town when I start my business so that I can have them work on my place when that day comes.

I want channel letters mounted on a raceway. That sounds like the strongest type of casing. It should keep the letters safe at least.

I like the halo-lit style. It is plain and simple, yet it has a very unique attractiveness to it.

The idea of having halo-lights on the channel letters appeals to me. They would appear more at night if this were done. Getting the right letters for a business sign could really benefit them in telling customers who they are.
